roblox winter games

EverQuest Next Landmark might be generating a lot of buzz over the impressive creations that players are putting together, but Roblox has been doing it for years, and many of those creating are still in grade school. Indeed, Roblox has continued to improve the structure of the game and give players great tools to become amateur developers. Recently, the developers showed off those tools with a series of winter games. But the real excitement is found in their Developer Exchange system, which now allows arm-chair developers to earn up to $2,000 a month from the games they create.

Let's take a look at what Roblox has been up to this winter in this week's MMO Family.

Fun, games, and lots of cash

Roblox is unique in that it's a kid-friendly MMO, but almost all of the content players enjoy is built by other players. Rather than corral kids into tightly controlled content with concrete limitations, Roblox opened the doors and invited players both young and old to learn and create. And the studio continues to improve upon those building tools. Just last month, the devs made it easier for designers to download useful plugins, and they launched Developer Stats, a feature that allows builders to track user traffic by day and by hour. Through Developer Stats, builders can see how many players are visiting their games and how long they are sticking around. In the future, this system will expand to include other areas, such as monetization.

In addition to the improvements with the building tools, Roblox recently added the ability to create and edit character animations. The Editor gives builders the ability to make unique movements to their characters and eventually even monetize them to earn revenue. In fact, builders are already earning some serious cash thanks to the Developer Exchange system. The best builders can cash in their Robux virtual currency for real money, and so far, 111 developers have cashed in over $46,000. Even more exciting, the monthly cap on revenue earnings is increasing from $500 a month to $2,000 a month.

What began as a physics simulation has now blossomed into a training ground/laboratory for armchair developers and young designers. Roblox doesn't hand-hold; on the contrary, if you really want to be in the top tier of builders, you'll need to learn the complexities of the tools, but there are some young players who have done just that. Kid-friendly MMOs stress safety in-game, which leads to regulated chat and limits on what players can do to the world and to each others. Roblox directly challenges that approach. They're giving young players the freedom to create and innovate, but they're also not trying to "dumb things down" just because part of their playerbase is young. What kids (and adults!) have done in Roblox is truly impressive, and each time I pop in to catch up with things, I'm amazed at how the games improve each time I do. Not only do they look better and play more smoothly, but the creativity that goes into the games themselves is amazing.

Winter Games

Not surprisingly, some players have pooled their talents and collaborated on larger scale projects, and some are even starting up their very own indie studios within Roblox. And recently, several worked together to launch a Winter Games event, inspired by the Winter Olympics. Players could enter the Winter Lodge and from there head out to compete in several different winter games, including snowboarding, snowball fighting, kart racing, and a winter-themed tank battle. Competitors could see their scores after completing an event and view their standings on the leaderboard. Players could unlock badges and win a variety of prizes, and there were over a half a million visits during the course of the event. If you missed it, no worries because there are still many other winter-themed games available to play, and you can catch the highlights on the website.

There are many ways to interact with Roblox. You can be a PvP star in paintball games or swordfights. You can explore a city or castle or ride a roller coaster. You can design a popular in-game item and run your own in-game store. Or you could step behind the curtain and become a top builder. What's exciting is that the studio is focusing its efforts on improving the building tools and the game mechanics, leaving much of the content design in the hands of the players. That's a refreshing change from what we're used to seeing in MMOs, particularly kid-friendly ones.

It's hard to look at Roblox as just a game because the core is really about learning the ins and outs of game design. To be the best, you need more than just a great idea for a game. You need to learn how to use the tools and be able to work with the Lua script. You need to be a savvy advertiser to market your game and bring players in. You also need to understand what metrics tell you about how players are interacting with your game and use those lessons to improve your games in the future. On one level, you certainly can just log in and pop into the game of your choice. But to get the most from Roblox, you really end up becoming a game developer, and it's exciting to see that even young players have risen to the challenge. These are the potential developers of the future, and if their current creations are any indication, the future of gaming looks very promising.

Roblox Community Guidelines and Rules

Roblox Community Guidelines and Rules

At Roblox we have an escalating system for dealing with Abuse Reports. When a player is reported a moderator checks what was going on at the time to make sure it's a real offense.

The real offenses is listed below. Once we've decided the player did something wrong, by our standards, then the following actions are taken.

   1. Reminder - kicked out of the game and asked to read the Terms of Service again
   2. Warning - again kicked out and asked to read the TOS
   3. One-day Ban - kicked out and not let back in for one day
   4. Three-day Ban - kicked out and not let back in for three days
   5. Seven-day Ban - kicked out and not let back in for seven days
   6. Fourteen-day Ban - kicked out and not let back in for two weeks
   7. Account Deletion - that account and all associated Robux, tickets, and
      items are locked from use.

Deletion may look harsh but the player had at least three chances to learn the rules of Roblox and didn't change their behavior. It's easy to protect your account.  Just play by the rules! Moderators also have the power to ban for 7 days and 14 days at a time, and will excercise this power if necessary. If you play by the rules then you can play without interruption. Accounts that are obviously created to harass, spam or otherwise troll the site may be deleted without warning.

What about false reporting or threats of being reported?

Well, the moderators look at the entire chatlog from the server, and look to see if anyone was doing anything against the rules. Sending in a  report does not mean that the person you reported  is going to automatically be banned, it means that one of the moderators will look at what  everyone was saying and decide the proper action.

Accusing someone is not enough to get them banned. And, reporting people for silly things just wastes our time as moderators. Spamming the report system is not tolerated and will result in action taken against you instead of the person you reported, especially if the moderator has a lot of reports and you're wasting their time.

Please note that one report is enough. Making more isn't going to speed up the process, and will actually make it slower. Report the user once, and make sure that you tell in the report what it was the offender was doing.

Reportable Offenses

    * Swearing

The use of bad language during in-game chat or on forum. This includes using fake letters like * or @ to disguise the swearing or shortening a phrase to just the first letters (a.k.a. acronym). Using symbols to get around the filters will be punished more harshly. If we as moderators can figure out what the swear word would be then it counts as profanity.

    * Threatening or Intimidating

Any action or verbal dialog that may threaten or intimidate another player is prohibited. This means real world threats. Threatening to bloxx someone or  push them into lava is part of the game. Don't say things like, "I'm going to find you and hurt you," which is a real world threat. Threatening people and stealing their items is not allowed.

    * Spamming

Sending useless messages to another user is prohibited. Posting lots of useless text on the forums is  prohibited as well.

    * Advertising

Constructive comments and criticism of ROBLOX are welcomed throughout the game. Any promotion of other  products or services on ROBLOX is prohibited.

    * Asking user for their password, account trading

Asking another ROBLOX user for their password, either in-game or through messaging is strictly prohibited.

    * Sexually oriented conversation

Any sexually oriented chat or behavior is prohibited. This includes trying to get players to date you, and threatening them sexually. No asking for boyfriends  or girlfriends is allowed.

    * Asking for Identifying information

Asking for any information about another user (age, location, phone number, email) will result in an account action. Placing information such as your street address, hometown, name, school, age, etc. can allow people to find you, which would be a bad thing. Hobbies, or game you play would be OK, but not revealing information. If you think some information may not be OK to tell to others, ask your parents before adding it to your profile.

    * Bad Places

Since every place is created by the players, sometimes an inappropriate place will get made. The ROBLOX moderators may decide a place is bad for the community. The moderator may clear the place to a Baseplate and delete the text description and title.

Rules: A ROBLOX place may not be realistically violent, horrific, gory, bloody, morbid or in any way sexual. The place may not contain swearing or break any of the other rules of ROBLOX. Additionally –

    * No natural disasters from within the last  2 years
    * No Terrorism
    * No Nazis
    * No wars (or military conflicts) from within the last 10 years
    * No contests
    * No dating
    * No marriage and family roleplay

See some examples of places that are and are not OK: http://roblox.zendesk.com/entries/221899

Make sure to back up your place using the “File > Save As” menu link in ROBLOX Studio; this way, if your place is deleted on the ROBLOX website your work is not totally lost. It is possible the place just needs a minor change to be appropriate – if so, you make the required change and re-publish it.

So what's not a real offense?

We don't consider these real offenses - Calling each other silly names like noob and dummy, shooting each other in games set up for bloxxing combat, killing
members of your own team, pushing each other off terrain that is high. Those things are just part of the game. Also, we can't enforce the rules of any one's world so if you want a "no killing" place then take out the weapons and dangerous terrain!

Remember that your rules on your place are not reportable, so if your place says "don't steal the flag" and someone does exactly that, we won't do anything to that someone. You must make your own systems to deal with them if you want custom rules enforced, we won't do it for you.

However, players can be given a Reminder when their behavior is very mean spirited and repeated over and over. This is a game for having fun, so ruining some
one's fun is considered an offense.

Account Deletion Actions

Severe violations of ROBLOX Community Guidelines will result in immediate deletion of a user account. Some actions are so bad that the player doesn't get three strikes.

    * Predatory Behavior

Any actions of a predatory nature will result in the immediate destruction of a user account and a report will be filed with the authorities. Asking users about their real information and stalking fall under this category.

    * Offensive Account Names,Profiles,Place descriptions

Accounts with obviously offensive text will be immediately banned.

    * Accessing another user's account

Maliciously accessing another user's account will result in immediate take-down of your account.

    * Impersonating a ROBLOX Administrator

Any user who impersonates a ROBLOX administrator or employee, either through chat or their profile will have their account taken down immediately.

    * Using Exploits, Glitches, or attempting to bypass ROBLOX security

Users found to be using exploits or glitches or in other ways attempting to get around the rules of ROBLOX will be deleted. Such activities should be reported immediately to an Admin and not used for personal gain.

Introduction

Making levels in ROBLOX is simple. Making good ones is not as simple. This tutorial covers how to make a level. For a tutorial on how to make a good level, see Design Tips for a Fun Multiplayer Map. Please note that the Community Guidelines have some rules on what you can put in a map.

Resetting the Level

If you ever want to reset your room or map, go to the My ROBLOX tab and click on the Place you would like to change. Click Configure this Place and scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on reset place. Once you've done that, click on either Happy Home In Robloxia, Starting BrickBattle Map, or Empty Baseplate. Once you've done that, click on Update at the bottom of the screen. When you've done that you have reset the room to the Selected template. (see example pictures below)

Building the Level

In the user page, click on "Build". This will start ROBLOX, and allow you to edit your place. An easier way to edit your level is to go to directly to the Roblox Studio, from Start > All Programs > ROBLOX > Roblox Studio. The studio is a little more advanced, but it is also much easier to work with bricks without having to move a player around. If you want to learn how to build things, then go to the Roblox Studio page.

Creating New Bricks

In the upper-left corner of the screen, click on "Insert". In the right of the screen, a box will appear. In the drop-down menu, select "Bricks". Click on a brick with the appropriate color.

Moving Bricks

The Game Tool, used for moving bricks
The Game Tool, used for moving bricks
Select the Game Tool. To move bricks, click on them, and, with the mouse cursor held, move the mouse. To rotate the brick, press "R". To tilt the brick, press "T".
That's about all you can do outside of the Studio editor. If you really want to make something cool, then go to the Roblox Studio and continue your work.

Editing Bricks

For this, the Roblox Studio is needed. The studio can easily be accessed by starting it from the start menu, or by clicking on the "Edit Mode" button in the toolbar. When the studio appears, there will be a window titled "Explorer" in the right of the screen. This window contains a list of every object in the game. To edit blocks, open the "Workspace" group (press the "+" to the left of its name). Click on the name of an object you would like to modify. From here, you can now change the properties of the object. Editable properties of bricks include size, shape, and color. To change shape, press resize.

Insert Premade stuff

Using insert you can insert premade models and put them in your place. You can also choose skyboxes that allow you to change the sky, tools, scripts, and other objects. Also from insert. You must click the down icon. Many choices will pop up.

Saving the Level

Click on the toolbar button in the upper left side of the screen that says "Edit Mode". Once that finishes opening, click on "File", then "Publish to ROBLOX". This will save your place to the Roblox server, where others can go to your place. You can also just click "Save" and save your map on your computer, so you can edit it later without people playing your half-done work.

Saving Frequently

You must save frequently. Be cautious of crashes in Roblox Studio. Try to avoid this by making backups of your creations to your harddrive as well. If you save to the server in Roblox, it's possible that if Roblox Studio crashes a certain amount of times, your place might dissappear completely.

Crashes

And yes, Roblox will crash. When working in Roblox Studio, and you are going to ungroup an object, in the 'Explorer' Menu, make sure that the object you're about to ungroup is the only highlighted object. If not, and you ungroup, Roblox Studio will crash. Also, Roblox Studio will crash if you cut Workspace, put Workspace into Lighting, or any other place for that matter, try to ungroup Workspace, or basically anything else that has to do with Workspace. Don't mess with Workspace unless you know what you're doing. Sometimes, the Studio will just crash on its own. It doesn't have anything to do with your computer, so don't worry. Just restart Studio, and try again. It is recommended that you save all your changes to a place, to your computer first. If the studio crashes while you're uploading, you can't get your changes back. Save often if you want to keep your models or creations.

Publishing models

You may also publish models into your profile when in studio mode in your place. To do this you must select the items in Explorer, then go to File > Publish Selection. You can type the name of the model, then a description. You can select to hide it or show it publicly. Showing it publicly allows people to use your models, so if you don't want them used, then hide them, or don't publish them at all.

Inserting models

Make sure you are in Roblox Studio.
There are two ways to insert models. One way is a categorized search of preexisting objects within the game. Near the top of your screen, you see "Tools, Insert, Fullscreen, Help, Exit". When you click on insert, it will show 20 types of bricks. The pulldown menu has: Bricks, Vehicles, Tools & Weapons, Furniture, Scenery, Traps, Small Buildings, Ramps, Robots, Game Objects, Disney XD Skatepark Elements, Disney XD Skatepark Decals, My Decals, Free Decals, My Models and free models on it. Click on a category specific choice pertaining to your search to find something you wish, some you can even search through! If there is a search, type in a keyword for what you want to find, and click "search". Once you find it, click on it and it will appear on your map.
Another way is if you already have a model saved to your computer. To insert such a model, click on the "insert" pulldown menu at the top of your screen, and then click "models". You can find this "insert" menu at the fourth button on the left, at the top of your screen. This "Insert" menu is next to "File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, Tools, Window, Help". A screen will open, asking for the location of the saved model file from your computer, with an .rbxm extension. Find the location of that file, and click "open".

Saving your Place to your Computer

Make sure you are in Roblox Studio first.
To save your place to your computer, which is recommended before uploading, click "File", then "Save As...". Save the file somewhere where you'll remember where you put it. Name it something that you'll remember too. It is highly recommended to save your place(s) because it is a safe-guard to prevent loss-of-data. If your upload fails, and your changes get deleted, you can just re-enter the place and try to upload it again. Without saving your place(s) to your computer, though, this will be impossible. Not only that you can have the real copy, if someone gets into your ROBLOX account and deletes your place(s), you can simply upload it again.

Publishing your place to ROBLOX

Make sure you are in Roblox Studio first.
To publish your place to your ROBLOX account go to File -> Publish to ROBLOX..., select Update, and click on the right place name. Note that any objects that are NOTarchivable will not be saved. Keep in mind that this overwrites the data contained in the last version, but can be reverted.
